Find Out Which Job Factors Matter Most to Dental Assistants

When choosing a career, there are various factors that must be considered in order to remain satisfied. From the ability to advance within the company to benefits to money, everyone has something that keeps them motivated and willing to accept a position in the first place. As an aspiring dental assistant, every dental assisting course can help you determine what you want out of your future career. As you move along in your journey, find out which job factors matter most to dental assistants.

Show Me the Money

This should come as no surprise that salary is one of the largest factors that matter most to dental assistants. In fact, no matter what profession you’re in, the amount of money you will make is typically the most important aspect of a prospective job. Everything from a starting fair wage to potential raises can make a big difference.

Dental assistants who are happy with their pay often feel appreciated by their employer and have the ability to learn other aspects of the industry to boost their income level. However, it is important to remember that various factors can determine how much you will make, including:

  • Where you live
  • Your credentials and whether you have a DANB certification
  • Experience

Maintaining a Balance

No one wants to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Fortunately, dental offices don’t work that way, but it’s natural to want a solid work-life balance. If you work on a team that is too small, you might find yourself working longer hours and finding it difficult to take time off because of the small staff.

Most dentist’s offices close at 5 p.m. and are closed on the weekend, which gives you ample time to rest and relax after a full work week. As part of the growing health care field, this is a luxury most individuals in the industry do not receive.

Opportunities for Growth

One of the greatest ways an employer can show their staff they appreciate them is by offering opportunities for professional development. It’s also important that they say “thank you” every now and then. When an employee feels appreciated for their work, it will usually cause them to do more than what is necessary in the future.

Dental assistants oftentimes feel devalued because of the work they do, so when a dentist or patient says, “thank you,” it’s a kind reminder that they’re an integral and important part of the entire team.

For an employer to encourage employees to participate in educational and growth opportunities, that shows their dedication and willingness to help an individual grow and excel in their career. For dental assistants, that is one of the greatest ways to show appreciation.

Supportive Environment

While there are certain people who prefer to work alone and not be bothered, becoming a dental assistant doesn’t allow for that type of atmosphere. You’re always working alongside the dentist or another team member, so it’s important to feel as if you’re supported by not only your employer but the rest of your team.

While you’re still in school, now is the best time to start thinking about what factors matter to you the most. What do you want in a future job? Is it more money, outstanding benefits, a proper balance between work and life? It’s up to you to decide.

It was a great experience! I was very nervous about dental and wasn’t sure how much I’d like it but through this experience I feel a lot better about going into the field. Jeanie who is the instructor is also a very warm person and truly cares for each of her students and their growth in the field.
